Thigh, calf or shin?
Legs offer long, generous surfaces, and each part has its own personality. The thigh is the spot for bigger statement pieces, from peonies and snakes to ornamental daggers and large mandalas, on show with shorts or a split skirt and hidden the rest of the time. The calf suits medium designs seen from behind, like a bird in flight, a tree or a compass. The shin takes long, narrow compositions: a vine, a column of symbols, a sword. Smaller symbols fit just above the knee. Our leg tattoos cover all three, and the larger pieces made for the upper leg have a page of their own under thigh tattoos.
Sizing for a surface that moves
Thigh skin curves and stretches when you sit or walk, so larger designs need a smooth stretch without folds, and a long piece should follow the length of the leg rather than wrap around it. The color is faint at first and deepens to blue-black within 24 to 36 hours. A big thigh piece is also a dress rehearsal: wear it for a week or two and see whether you still want it permanently.
On the legs, wear time is up to 2 weeks. Tight jeans and leggings rub the same spot all day, and that friction speeds up the skin's natural renewal, so the design may fade a little sooner; a daily layer of moisturizer helps. How long temporary tattoos last has tips to make it hold.
Leg tattoos often continue a look that starts higher or lower: explore hip tattoos, or head down to ankle tattoos and foot tattoos.
