A plain Latin cross is one of the simplest tattoos there is, and one of the most personal. Here you'll find it in several forms: a thin fine line outline small enough for a finger, a solid black silhouette, and more detailed cross tattoos with wings, flowers, a dove, rays of light, or tribal and gothic lines.
Simple or ornate
Minimalist crosses suit the inner wrist, the side of a finger, the spot behind the ear or just below the collarbone. Ornate designs need more room: the forearm, a shoulder blade or the space between the shoulders. Prefer a word to a symbol? Look at faith tattoos; for portraits of Christ, see Jesus tattoos. The wider religious and Christian collection brings them all together.
How it wears
Many people use a temporary cross to settle on size and position before a permanent tattoo, or wear one for a baptism, a confirmation or a wedding. Temporary cross tattoos go on in two minutes, start out pale, then develop to blue-black over 24 to 48 hours. Showers and swimming are fine. Expect up to two weeks on the forearm or shoulder, less on fingers and hands, which get washed more often. Our guide on how to try a tattoo before you get it walks you through the size and placement test.
