Three days of music, one queue for the showers and a lot of sweat. Festival tattoos have to survive all of it, which is why ours are printed in jagua ink that develops in the top layer of skin instead of sitting on it like a sticker.
Designs that read from across the field
Moons and suns, alone or as a pair. Lotus flowers. Butterflies, in fine line or bold outline. Hearts, stars and smileys, plus small minimalist symbols you can line up along a forearm or tuck behind an ear. Everything comes out blue-black, so it works with any outfit, from a crop top to a rain poncho.
Go for spots people actually see: shoulder, upper arm, collarbone, the back of the neck, an ankle above the boot. Larger pieces suit the shoulder blade or the outer thigh. Tiny ones fit a wrist or a finger, though hands and fingers fade sooner because they get washed and rubbed all day.
Rain, sweat and campsite showers
Apply at home, two or three days before you leave. It takes two minutes at most. The design looks pale at first and darkens over 24 to 48 hours, so it is at full strength when the gates open. Keep it dry and unrubbed for 8 hours; after that it's waterproof. Heavy sweating and repeated washing speed up the fade, yet it can stay for up to two weeks, long enough to outlast the wristband.
Our festival tattoo guide covers timing and what to pack. Celebrating a birthday instead? Browse party tattoos, or the sunnier side of summer tattoos. Going with a crew? A custom tattoo with your group's name can be ordered from three copies, so everyone gets matching festival tattoos.
