Swallow tattoo

Few designs pack as much history into so little space as a swallow tattoo. The forked tail and swept-back wings stay readable even when tiny, so most pieces here fit almost anywhere.
Silhouettes, fine lines and dotwork
Solid silhouettes give the boldest result, often as a trio caught mid-flight. Fine line swallows go lighter, lined up in a row like birds on a wire. The classic outline keeps only the contour and that sharp tail, while dotwork pairs a single bird with a small flower. Want variety? A bird pack puts swallows next to other species on one sheet.
Wear one alone, set two face to face, or stack three. A mirrored pair suits both collarbones or both shoulders. One bird fits the inner wrist; a trio can follow the line of the upper arm. For other wings, browse our bird tattoos. If the sea is part of your story, anchor tattoos make the obvious companion.
Why sailors wore them
Old maritime lore says a sailor earned one swallow for every 5,000 nautical miles at sea. Since the bird returns to the same place each spring, many crews read the swallow tattoo as a promise of getting home. Today people pick it for a move, a homecoming or a fresh start.
How it looks on skin
Each design is printed with jagua ink that develops in the top layer of skin. Application takes two minutes at most. Right after, the bird looks faint, almost see-through. Over the next 24 to 48 hours it deepens to blue-black. Keep it dry and avoid rubbing for 8 hours. After that, it's waterproof through showers, swims and workouts. Expect up to two weeks on the shoulder or upper arm. Hands and fingers? Less, since they get washed all day.
