From one collarbone to the other, the chest is a placement you can show or hide with a single button. Chest tattoos range from a short line of script under the collarbone to wide, mirrored pieces across the upper chest, and they work on every body.
A few directions to explore:
- Along the collarbone: lettering, a pair of swallows, a thin branch or small stars following the line of the bone.
- Across the upper chest: spread wings, birds, lion heads, eyes and symmetrical geometry that needs width.
- Over the heart: a single small symbol, a heartbeat line or a flower, set slightly off center.
Match the design to the width of your chest by holding the sheet up in front of a mirror first. The skin should be clean, dry and free of oil or lotion. Expect a pale result at first and a blue-black finish after 24 to 48 hours.
A chest piece is also an easy way to test a placement many people hesitate over, since you can see how it fits your wardrobe and your daily routine before going further.
How long does it stay? Up to 2 weeks on the chest, a little less where a bag strap or a seatbelt rubs. Moisturizing the skin every day keeps it looking fresh for longer. More on wear time in our article on how long temporary tattoos last.
For a piece lower down, beneath or between the breasts, see underboob tattoos. To carry your chest tattoos toward the arm, browse shoulder tattoos.
