Foot & Ankle Tattoos

Sandal season is the obvious moment for a foot tattoo, yet an ankle piece peeking out of cropped jeans works all year. Our foot & ankle tattoos are mostly small and slim, shaped for skin that bends with every step.
Ankle. The ankle bone and the inner ankle suit small round motifs, while anklet-style bands, vines and dotted chains wrap around the joint. A one-line animal or a few stars just above the bone stays discreet, a bit like jewelry you never have to take off in the shower. For more designs made for that spot, see ankle tattoos.
Top of the foot. The instep gives you an elongated, slightly curved surface, good for a floral stem, a feather, a short script or a mandala pointing toward the toes. Designs that run lengthwise make the foot look longer, while horizontal ones sit better across the ankle.
Toes and the edge of the foot. Keep it minimal: dots, a tiny symbol, a line that follows the outline of the foot.
A word of honesty: feet are among the zones where the color goes sooner, since shoes, socks and walking keep rubbing the skin. You will get a shorter run than the up to 2 weeks possible on an arm or the upper back. Leave the area dry, and out of socks and closed shoes, for 8 hours after application. Our article on how long temporary tattoos last explains what else plays a part.
Foot & ankle tattoos pair well with a design higher up: see leg tattoos, or browse tiny tattoos for the smallest pieces of all.
